19 June 2012, Hong Kong – CBRE is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Amod Jayawant as Director, Critical Environments. He will be responsible for expanding the existing service platform locally to provide a full service offering to all participants within the critical environments sector.

Mr. Jayawant is a seasoned global manager in designing IT services and operations across regional data centres worldwide. He has over 20 years of experience in the build out and management of the critical environments sector. Prior to joining CBRE, he was previously the Operations Manager of GPX Global Systems Inc, Egypt.

“We are very pleased to have Mr. Jayawant join us to expand our service scope in the critical environments sector. We have a substantial platform in the US and Europe and have been adding resources in Asia to support our clients in this dynamic marketplace. There has been a flood of activity in the critical environments sector in the past 18 months on the back of the HKSAR Government’s significant effort to promote the industry. Local and international players, both operators and end users are investing heavily on Greenfield site development and retro-fitting of existing industrial buildings. Mr. Jayawant has a wealth of experience and will provide our clients with all-rounded services including managed service site comparison, land and building searching for contract negotiating to construction and operational advice which will significantly strengthen our capabilities in this sector,” said Mr. Darren Benson, Senior Director of Industrial and Logistics Services for CBRE Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.

To accommodate the rapid development of data centre industry, the Government is set to increase relevant land supply over the next two to three years. The bulk of the new supply will be provided within Tseung Kwan O industrial estate with over 1.5 million sq. ft. of projects currently under development. Other options include conversion of existing industrial space within properties located on Hong Kong Island, Shatin and Tsuen Wan or Kwai Chung. Aside from this, in the recent 2012- 13 Budget, the Financial Secretary has also announced two measures to encourage the use of existing industrial buildings or industrial lots for data centre development.

These include the exemption of waiver fee for changing parts of eligible industrial buildings into data centre use, and to assess the premium for lease modification.
